Puntland Presidential electoral committee has tabled new conditions on candidates participating in the upcoming presidential elections.
More than 25 candidates who have shown their bid to take part in the regional leadership position are required to fulfill conditions set by the committee before January 8th democratic exercise.
According to a statement, the contenders who will address the regional parliament on Monday 7th must be practicing Muslim, aged 40 years and above, not married to a foreigner, and deposit $ 20,000 non-refundable fee for registration.
Candidates vying for deputy president must also pay $10,000 non-refundable fee.
According to the committee, three candidates with highest votes will proceed to the next round of the elections slated on Tuesday next week.
Sixty-six regional parliament members will decide who will be the next regional leader for the future leaders.
The lawmakers of Puntland regional assembly have elected Abdihakim Mohamed Ahmed Dhobo Dareed as the new speaker of the state’s assembly on Friday after two rounds of voting in Garowe, the administrative capital of Puntland state.
Abdihakim secured 43 votes out of 66, defeating his adjacent rival, Abdi Jamal who garnered 23 votes.
